Steve McDowell

Senior Analyst, Data & Storage

Steve McDowell is Moor Insights & Strategy’s senior analyst covering storage technologies. Steve has over 25 years of deep industry experience in a variety of strategy, engineering, and strategic marketing roles. The unifying theme of his career has been the enablement of new storage, data and systems technologies for the enterprise market.

Steve most recently comes from Nimble Storage (an HPE company), where he established and led a broad-based team building a hyper-converged storage and compute solution.  He first came to Nimble Storage to lead the team that delivered fibre channel technology into Nimble’s flash storage arrays. Steve was subsequently given ownership of all storage protocol development for Nimble OS.

Prior to Nimble Storage, McDowell spent eight years at AMD.  As a principal on AMD’s corporate strategy team, he was focused on driving adoption of AMD technologies into adjacent and emerging vertical markets.  This broad-based work included such diverse activities as establishing a foot-hold for GPU in the cloud, prototype development of next generation commercial client devices, and the enablement of new ODM engagement models designed to lessen the pain of OEM adoption of new silicon technologies.

Steve was originally brought into AMD to establish and lead the strategic marketing effort for AMD’s silicon virtualization and security features. He established AMD’s virtualization program, managed the relationships with the virtualization OSV/ISV community, coordinated technology adoption with OEMs, and was AMD’s public spokesman on these topics.

AMD was a diversion from Steve’s passion for storage.  He started his career as a UNIX kernel developer, but quickly found his way to NCR where he became an engineering team leader in the development of storage replication technologies.   He continued to Network Engines, where he led the system software team developing some of the industry’s first remote managed server appliances, including a NAS solution.  Steve worked on a storage virtualization product at Fujitsu-Softek and spent time leading the development of server appliances at Penguin Computing.

In addition to his work delivering enterprise technology, McDowell is also an active entrepreneur.  He has been the technical co-founder in three start-ups and continues to be involved the most recent, Blobfish Activity Hub, which is focused on providing business analytics to the youth activities market.

Steve has been granted six patents in the area of highly available storage systems.
