Moor Insights & Strategy Weekly Ending october 28, 2022

By Patrick Moorhead - November 2, 2022

I hope you all had a great week. Many of us at MI&S are busy on the road.

Last week, I attended the Lenovo IDG Industry Analyst Council in NYC.  Paul had advisory meetingsMelody attended Money 20/20 in Las Vegas and Snowflake Data Cloud World in AustinSteve traveled to San Francisco for Arm DevSummit.

I will attend Cisco’s Partner Summit and Honeywell’s Connect event this week.  Anshel is traveling to Las Vegas to attend AMD RDNA 3 Launch.  Will is in London modertating Total Telecom Congress.  Steve will be attending the CommVault Event in Charlotte, NC.

We are all very busy which we like!

Last week, our MI&S team published 19 deliverables:

The press quoted us with 10 citations. Journalists wanted to hear about Intel, Micron, NXP, Pure Storage, and T-Mobile.

MIS Quick Insights:

 AR/VR (Anshel Sag)

 Carrier/Wireless (Will Townsend)

  • It is earnings time for mobile network operators, and both AT&T and T-Mobile had an impressive Q3, with Verizon struggling. It is worth pointing out that T-Mobile reported postpaid net customer adds that exceeded AT&T and Verizon combined. If T-Mobile can execute against its enterprise services objectives, it could further widen its lead.

Datacenter:

  • Storage- (Steve McDowell)
    • It’s turning into a rough year for drive vendors as the client computing market continues its slump, significantly impacting both Seagate and Western Digital. Seagate’s latest earnings show total revenue down 35% year-on-year, while WD declined 26%. WD is guiding down, projecting a fourth quarter that will be down roughly 38% from Q4 2021. Seagate is projecting an even worse scenario, projecting up to a 59% drop from Q4 2021, and is instituting a headcount reduction of up to 3,000 jobs. While the bulk of weakness is in the client segments, near-line HDDs were also down in both cloud and enterprise.
    • Pure Storage released new products for the burgeoning cloud-native world at this past week’s KubeCon event. Pure is now offering its Portworx multi-cloud Kubernetes management solution as-a-service. This is a strong play, enabling enterprise customers to manage their Kubernetes clusters from a single management platform regardless of which cloud or on-prem infrastructure that cluster resides in.  Pure also upgraded Portworx Enterprise, announcing the new Portworx Enterprise 3.0 release, which is heavy on storage performance and disaster recovery enhancements. This release is worth checking out if you do anything with cloud-native and Kubernetes.
  • Networking- (Will Townsend)
    • Versa Networks recently landed another $120M in equity and debt financing despite a crowded SD-WAN and SASE market. I recently spent time with executives to gain further insights. The company claims its platform is differentiated, combining AI and machine learning to deepen its security integration. AIOps is claimed widely by many SASE platform providers, so time will tell just how different its platform is versus other competitors.
  • Server- (Matt Kimball)

FinTech (Melody Brue)

IIoT and IoT (Bill Curtis)

Retail Tech (Melody Brue)

Security (Will Townsend)

  • Zscaler recently announced several solutions addressing data loss prevention. Executives recently briefed me, and its document classification visibility is a potential game changer. The recent acquisition of a workflow automation capability should provide immediate incremental sales opportunities.
