• Orange announced additional partnerships with NEC and Mavenir to extend its Open RAN 5G SA trial that began last year. The biggest question is whether Open RAN will become deployed commercially with established carriers or whether it will be a greenfield network consideration with Dish, Rakuten, and Reliance Jio. It seems to be the latter for now.   
• Reliance Jio wants to connect 100 million locations in India with its 5G FWA service. It is an aggressive target given a current install base of roughly 2 million today. The details related to the company’s AirFiber service are light, but the key to reaching this lofty goal will be pricing the broadband service competitively, given the Indian market dynamics.

  • Prashanth Shenoy has jumped from Cisco to VMware, and I believe VMWare will benefit tremendously. Mr. Shenoy led the marketing effort for a $25B portfolio of products at Cisco that included cloud infrastructure and software. From my perspective, marketing is an area that can use improvement at VMware and Mr. Shenoy's 22 years of experience at Cisco should be well utilized.     
  • Nile emerged from stealth this week. Hot off of his involvement with Pensando, John Chambers is teaming with another former Cisco executive to launch a Wi-Fi as a Service that meters per user session. From my perspective, the timing is ideal as companies determine the budget and requirements for supporting hybrid work.

• Zscaler recently reported earnings that beat expectations. Consequently, the stock price closed 20% higher the same day. Ironically, the company was targeted by financial analyst naysayers just a few weeks before. I reiterated at that time that the company's fundamentals are solid, and it is delivering one of the most complete zero trust platforms in the industry.   
• Converged security and networking are becoming a very crowded space. As security companies lean into networking and networking companies lean into security, customers are faced with endless solutions. A few companies will rise to the top, and significant market consolidation could occur.
